Letters: Meyer’s preferring smaller box

Dear Parrots magazine,

Meyer’s preferring smaller box

In reply to the letter in the Parrot Queries page, in the June 2013 issue (185) “Meyer’s harder to breed,” I purchased my pair of Meyer’s over a year ago. They came with a small nest-box measuring 32cm x 19cm sq (13in x 7.5in sq) and I was told they were a proven pair. On doing some research on these parrots, this box seemed too small, so I built one measuring 48cm x 30cm sq (19in x 12in sq) and hung it up. For a year and a half they took no notice of it at all.

Letters: A wonderful day at THINK PARROTS 2013

Dear Parrots magazine,

A wonderful day at THINK PARROTS 2013

After weeks of waiting and preparing, the day of Think Parrots finally arrived. As I had no idea what to expect I was quite excited. I got up at 03:30 hrs to get ready and at 04:15 hrs the taxi arrived to pick me up for the one and a half hour drive to Schiphol Airport (Amsterdam).

Letters: Macaw mutation mystery continues

Dear Parrots magazine,

Macaw mutation mystery continues

I saw the recent article and pictures about the Blue & Gold Macaw mutations in the April 2013 (issue 183) which reminded me of a painting I did some years ago.

Letters: Hand-reared parrots not for breeding

Dear Parrots magazine,

Hand-reared parrots not for breeding

Thank you for another interesting and educational issue (May 2013 – 184). I found your letters page particularly interesting this time round, not least because my 18 year-old African Grey, Meshi, has taken over the bathroom as a suitable place to build a nest and raise our chicks. (Please note the plural “our.”) Having been my companion from the age of ten weeks old and taken from the parental nest for hand-rearing when she was ten days old, she does not know she is a parrot.

Letters: Discipline is not alien to parrots

Dear Parrots magazine,

Discipline is not alien to parrots

I have a few concerns regarding the article by Betty Jean Craige in the February 2013 edition of Parrots magazine, "Why it's not natural for Cosmo to be subservient."  The article, while supposedly encouraging natural parrot behaviour, shows a distinct disregard for parrot safety and in places suggests irresponsibility.

Letters: Some good points, some not so good…

Dear Parrots magazine,

Some good points, some not so good…

Dr Kerr makes some good points, but there are some other points with which I disagree, but all of them parrot lovers have a right to hear.
