A Great Book

Dear Parrots magazine,

A Great Book

I have just read Understanding Parrots, Cues from Nature by Rosemary Low, it is a thought provoking read.  The book is packed full of information that can only have been gained from a lifetime of interaction with parrots, both captive and wild, their carers (good and bad), breeders, researchers and vets.

Buyer Beware

Dear Parrots magazine,

Buyer Beware

I want to just point out how careful one has to be when buying a parrot.  I have kept parrots now for over 10 years and a close friend of mine has also been bitten by the bug and decided she would like an African Grey – I have three.

Flying with a nonagenarian

Dear Parrots magazine,

Flying with a nonagenarian

My African Grey, Molly, comes to me from across the room when I say, "Come here", and wave a peanut.  Not all the time, by any manner of means, and never outside the room, refusing to fly through its doorway except on rare occasions where I am in the kitchen, when she flies in to check on what's for din-dins.  She can give me a look on these occasions speaking volumes, "Dolt! I come for the peanut not because of the blah-blah whatever coming from your beak."

Clipping is not for training

Dear Parrots magazine,

Clipping is not for training

In response to Beth Paterson’s article, Wing Clipping (Issue 202). What a shame Beth Paterson, who studied Animal Behaviour, decided to clip her Orange-winged Amazon’s wings as a training aid.  She implied she hadn’t made much progress using positive reinforcement alone.

Is variety the best solution?

Dear Parrots magazine,

Is variety the best solution?

Choosing the right diet to feed my birds has never been an easy decision, particularly with the many different opinions that I have read about.  Do I feed seed, pellets, fresh food or whatever else?

Response to a reader's query

Dear Parrots magazine,

Response to a reader's query

It was interesting to read the question submitted by Alan Baker about parent-rearing his African Grey chicks, and yet still wanting to socialise and tame the babies.
