Calcium: Your bird’s life may depend on it

Spreads for web 4

by Rosemary Low
I have often been asked which additives I give to my birds. My answer: only calcium and only during the breeding season. As a general rule, my birds receive all the nutrients necessary from their diet. However, this would not be the case if I kept Grey Parrots. The number of Greys that die because their owners are unaware of the importance of this mineral in their diet is heartbreaking.

I have had people telephone me almost in hysterics describing the convulsions or fits their Greys are suffering at that moment. It is too late to help them, as the bird is dying from calcium deficiency. This seems to affect Greys to a much greater degree than other parrot species..
