Letters: Importance of democracy

Dear Parrots magazine,

Importance of democracy

Formal organisation of Bureaucracies i.e. the Budgerigar Society (BS) inevitably leads to Oligarchy, under which organizations originally idealistic and democratic eventually come to be dominated by a small, self-serving group of people who achieved positions of power and responsibility. This can occur in large organisations because it is physically impossible for everyone to get together every time a decision has to be made. Consequently, a small group is given the responsibility of making decisions. People in this group would become enthralled with their elite positions and more and more inclined to make decisions that protect their own power rather than represent the will of the BS Membership they are supposed to serve. Bureaucracy and democracy do not mix, despite any protestations and promises that they would not become like all the rest, those placed in positions of responsibility and power often come to believe that they too are indispensable, and more knowledgeable than those they serve. As time goes on, they will become further removed from the rank and file of the BS Membership.

Letters: Dear Buster

Dear Parrots magazine,

Dear Buster

I would like to thank Pam Fryer for sharing with us the final chapter of this very tragic story, but also so enlightening. In fact it’s extremely important we are reminded to take every possible measure to protect our feathered family against theft, because it would be not only our heartbreaking loss, but also a serious chance that our parrots end in the hands of people who see them as ‘things’, not as living creatures even more sensitive than we humans are.

Letters: Confused

Dear Parrots magazine,

Confused

On reading the November issue, I am confused and frustrated over the different opinions and letters regarding the National Parrot Sanctuary. Either people love it or hate it. This cannot be. I have just read a report from the Sanctuary itself. They have been inspected by the RSPCA, the zoo licensing Authority, who spent six hours inspecting, and the Trading Standard officer. They were all 100 per cent happy. I have recently included The Sanctuary in my will, and now I am rather concerned.

Letters: Strongly disagree

Dear Parrots magazine,

Strongly disagree

I would like to respond to Trevor Hollings comments on unsuitability of the aviaries and that the National Parrot Sanctuary is only interested in making profit (Parrots magazine October 09). I for one strongly disagree with this for the aviaries are more than adequate and with that many parrots, most money would go into feeding and vet fees.

Letters: Feral parakeets

Dear Parrots magazine,

Feral parakeets

I have read about feral Ring-necked Parakeets and the DEFRA editorial on the Parrots’ website and am not confident that a cull will not take place.
