Dear Parrots magazine,

Blue & Gold advertising alcohol

I read with interest your article in the December issue about the danger of feeding alcohol to parrots, and totally agree with all you have written.

I now see Aldi have an advert on TV featuring a Blue & Gold Macaw surrounded by wines and spirits. There are two versions, one has the Macaw with a table in front of him with lines of alcohol on it and the Macaw repeats over and over again, “I like that one, and that one, and that one,” and in the other the layout is the same, but this time the Macaw is saying “I like it, I like it, I like it.”

We have already complained to the Advertising Standards Authority, and have urged as many members of SafeHaven Parrot Refuge as possible, to complain as well. We think that this advert could definitely encourage people to give their parrots alcohol, and that it should be banned. If the Macaw was advertising fruit, nuts or vegetables it wouldn’t be so bad. Do you feel as strongly about this as we do? If so, please email the Authority at: www.asa.org.uk or write to them at: Advertising Standards Authority Ltd., Mid City Place, 71 High Holborn, London WC1V 6QT.
